Curriculum Aims
Geography is about you and the 6.9 billion people you share the planet with. Our intent, as a department, is to promote learning about people, places and how they interact with their environment. Students will have a developed knowledge and understanding of the world they live in and it’s future that will remain with them whether they continue their geographical journey in education or not. The skills they will develop in the subject will enable them to be global citizens with the ability to debate, justify and evaluate; therefore ‘thinking like a geographer’. These skills can then be applied to any subject and employment later on. In geography, students learn beyond the classroom. They should be able to make connections and have an empathy of the issues and challenges facing the natural and human environments, through a wide variety of topics we cover.
Our students’ geographical journey will travel through the traditional and ever-changing nature of the subject. Whilst both the human and natural environments are always important, we aim to deliver an up-to-date curriculum on these and other topics that bring realistic and current challenges of a changing climate to the forefront. The geography team are dedicated to helping students enjoy their studies, as well as challenging them in their learning. Each individual is an enthusiastic spokesperson for the subject, advocating issues that face us all and ensuring that time spent with us is enjoyable and beneficial. Our uptake at GCSE is strong and the journeys through KS 4 & 5 are as varied and engaging as KS3. Our aim is that every student at Sandhurst leaves as a global citizen having received a high standard of geographical education that equips them for their future on this planet.
