Sandhurst School launched a Peer Mentoring Scheme for students in September 2008. It appears that sometimes students who are experiencing difficulties do not always feel confident enough to approach an adult and would, instead, prefer to talk to other students about their concerns in a safe and professional environment.
Peer Mentors support students by offering drop-in sessions at ‘The Spot’ on Monday and Thursday lunchtimes. This gives students the opportunity to meet other students in a quiet and supportive environment. Sometimes there may be no particular problem but a student just feels like a ‘time out’ from the main student body during breaks and this is an ideal place for them to go and have a quiet chat, read or play games with like-minded students. A student may also wish to have a one-to-one meeting with a Peer Mentor and this mentoring relationship is gently fostered, based on trust, confidence and mutual involvement. For the mentees it provides additional support, offers encouragement and motivation for school work, helps to build confidence and self-esteem as well as encouraging a more positive participation in school life. It also gives mentors the opportunity to improve their communication skills and increase their own confidence.
This scheme is still in its infancy but we do believe that it is worthwhile and will encourage students to care for their peers. The peer mentoring initiative has already proved successful in a number of areas including supporting the primary/secondary school transition and developing study skills and support. Peer Mentors have a high profile in and around the school and we are very proud of their work.
