Head of Department: Mr Parry
Sandhurst school is proud to have been awarded Science Specialist Status. We have a lively, vibrant, wonderfully resourced department and offer a wide range of courses for our students.
Feel free to browse around our area of the website, or return to the curriculum homepage to discover more about other subjects at Sandhurst School.
In addition to the hundreds of Science lesson resources available to Students the department can now offer live animals to expand knowledge on Adaptations, Classification and Habitat.
The new resource now includes AFRICAN LAND SNAILS, STICK INSECTS, FISH and MICE. Students are also encouraged to study some of the more common native fauna such as Woodlice, Worms and other small Invertebrates. Lesson activities also include Pond Dipping and setting small traps to collect Insects.
As a result of the new livestock a small ‘Pet Club’, made up of KS3 students, has evolved and this endeavours to teach animal husbandry and handling techniques. The students enjoy the responsibility of visual health checks, cleaning out and feeding of the animals.
Students are also encouraged to bring in any interesting or unusual natural finds to display in the departments cabinets, so far we have received examples of Stag Beetles, Crayfish, Dragonflies, Mosses, Lichens and Seaweed! Keep them coming!
