Head of Department: Mr Prout
The mathematics department is a successful and supportive team of six full time qualified mathematics teachers. We occupy six classrooms, two resource bases and a departmental office on the first floor of the building. The department is well resourced with a variety of mathematical equipment and texts.
In Key Stage 3, schemes of work are differentiated to give support, core and extension material. Students are set according to their ability and these sets are reviewed every half term. The department also has a number of systems for reward in place, including certificates for numeracy tests, exceptional coursework and exam results
In Key Stage 4, students are set according to their Key Stage 3 results and their ability is regularly reviewed through tests, investigations and teacher assessments. Many students take part in external mathematics competitions and use technology when appropriate.
In Year 12 students are also offered the Ed Excel modular AS mathematics, which consists of Pure Mathematics and one applied module, (Decision Mathematics, Mechanics or Statistics).
In Year 13 they can then complete the A level by studying Pure Mathematics and another applied module. We can also offer Further Mathematics, which is ideal for students wishing to study mathematics at degree level.
