The School Community - A sense of belonging

ENCOURING A SENSE OF BELONGING IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING THAT WE DO

LessonWe are very proud of the excellent relationships that exist within the Sandhurst School community.  The emphasis in the school is very much on learning together and caring for one another.  This co-operation across the school community leads to a strong sense of common purpose and accomplishment.

We work hard to ensure that everyone involved with the school feels a part of it.  Sandhurst School is a very cohesive community in which everyone, regardless of background, can make an active contribution.  We enjoy excellent support from parents and actively seek ways to reach out and involve the local community.  The governing body plays a strong role in the leadership and direction of the school so that we can all move forward together.

This sense of belonging is extended both to the local and global community and we are particularly proud of our students for their sense of social responsibility.  Students seek opportunities to become active citizens and give of their time to benefit others.  They raise a significant amount of money for charities, in particular supporting the school ‘Reaching Rwanda’ campaign which has enabled students to see directly the positive impact of their fundraising through close links with a village in Rwanda.

One of the main ways that we engender a sense of belonging is by coming together regularly to share and celebrate success.  Every week students attend an assembly, alternating between a House assembly one week and a year group assembly the next.  At the end of every term we come together as a whole school and look back on the achievements of the school community over the preceding term.  Every year prizes are awarded to students for both academic success and contribution to the school at our Junior and Senior Celebration of Success evenings.

Our hope is that every student will leave school feeling that they have been a part of something special.  They will have had many opportunities to participate and succeed. They will go into the world with positive self-esteem, a sense of social responsibility and care for others, and a strong set of values to guide them through a successful and fulfilling life.
